GoldBod Funds US$19,332 Life-Changing Lymphedema Surgery for 33-Year-Old Woman

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), through its Special Intervention Programmes (SIP) Unit, has fully funded a life-changing lymphatic transplant surgery for 33-year-old Gloria Kafui Sarbah, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to providing critical healthcare support to vulnerable Ghanaians.

GoldBod financed the entire cost of the specialised procedure, amounting to US$19,332, enabling Ms. Sarbah to undergo successful surgery in India after years of battling lymphedema, a devastating condition that had significantly affected her mobility and quality of life.

A resident of Nsawam and formerly employed as a factory hand, Gloria’s ordeal began in 2006 when she noticed an unusual swelling in one of her feet. What initially appeared to be an intermittent condition gradually worsened over the years, forcing her to seek medical attention from several hospitals in Ghana.

Despite undergoing numerous medical examinations, including MRI scans, and two surgical procedures, her condition remained unresolved. It was only in 2024 that specialists finally diagnosed her with lymphedema, a chronic disorder caused by damage to the lymphatic system, after years of uncertainty and unsuccessful treatments.

Following the diagnosis, Gloria was referred to India to undergo a specialised lymphatic transplant procedure, an advanced surgery involving the transplantation of healthy lymphatic tissue to restore proper lymphatic drainage and improve limb function.

Recognising the urgency of her condition and the prohibitive cost of the treatment, GoldBod’s Special Intervention Programmes Unit assessed and approved financial support covering the entire cost of the surgery.

The procedure has since been successfully completed, marking a significant milestone in Gloria’s long journey towards recovery.

Medical specialists have indicated that she is expected to return to India in six months for a second-stage procedure to reduce the remaining swelling in her affected leg and further restore its normal appearance and function.

Speaking after the successful surgery, Gloria expressed profound gratitude to GoldBod for giving her a renewed chance at life after nearly two decades of living with the debilitating condition.

The intervention has not only restored hope but also positioned her to regain her independence and eventually return to productive employment.

The support extended to Gloria Kafui Sarbah once again reflects GoldBod’s unwavering commitment to transforming lives beyond the mining sector by ensuring that vulnerable Ghanaians receive the assistance they need when it matters most.
