The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), through its Special Intervention Programmes (SIP) Unit, has donated GH¢180,000 to support a life-changing hip replacement surgery for Christabel Mensah at St. Joseph Hospital, Koforidua, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable Ghanaians through targeted healthcare interventions.
The financial support has enabled Ms. Mensah, a resident of Tarkwa, to undergo the first phase of a critical double hip replacement surgery after enduring severe mobility challenges for more than two and a half years.
According to medical reports, Christabel’s condition began during the fourth month of pregnancy when one of her legs became severely swollen. Subsequent medical examinations revealed extensive damage to both hip joints, a complication associated with her sickle cell condition, leaving her in urgent need of bilateral hip replacement surgery.
For over two years, Christabel and her family struggled to raise the substantial funds required for the specialised procedure, with repeated efforts to secure financial assistance proving unsuccessful.
Following an assessment and verification of her request by GoldBod’s Special Intervention Programmes Unit, the institution approved financial support amounting to GH¢180,000 to facilitate the surgery.
The first operation, involving the replacement of her left hip, has been successfully completed at St. Joseph Hospital in Koforidua. Medical specialists are expected to undertake the second surgery on her right hip after she has fully recovered from the initial procedure.
The intervention is expected to restore Christabel’s mobility, relieve years of debilitating pain and significantly improve her quality of life.
The support for Christabel Mensah further reflects GoldBod’s dedication to making a meaningful impact beyond the mining sector by giving hope to individuals and families facing extraordinary health challenges.
By investing in critical healthcare interventions, GoldBod continues to reaffirm its commitment to improving lives, supporting communities and contributing to Ghana’s broader social and economic development.
