GoldBod CEO Pledges Robust Export and Traceability Controls for Ghana’s Diamond

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, Esq., has pledged a robust export control and traceability system for Ghana’s diamond resources.

As part of this commitment, he stated that GoldBod has undertaken deliberate reforms aimed at strengthening governance across the diamond value chain to ensure that Ghana’s diamonds remain conflict-free and responsibly sourced.

Delivering the opening address at the review visit of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme in Accra, the CEO noted that GoldBod will continue to collaborate with allied regulatory agencies to ensure effective oversight and compliance within the diamond sector.

“Over the years, our national Kimberley Process Certification Scheme framework has been anchored on strong inter-agency coordination, bringing together the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and its allied agencies such as the Minerals Commission, regulatory bodies including the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, law enforcement agencies, and industry stakeholders,” he noted.

“Through this collaborative approach, we continue to uphold robust export controls, traceability systems, and verification mechanisms to ensure our diamonds remain conflict-free and responsibly sourced,” he added.

The CEO highlighted a number of reforms implemented by Ghana to improve oversight and accountability within the diamond value chain.

“In recent years, Ghana has undertaken deliberate reforms to further strengthen governance across the diamond value chain. These include improvements in inspection and verification mechanisms, strengthened internal control systems, enhanced data management processes, and sustained capacity building for staff and frontline personnel,” he explained.

Mr. Gyamfi said the reforms demonstrate Ghana’s commitment to continuous improvement and responsiveness to global expectations regarding responsible diamond trade.

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme review visit is designed to assess Ghana’s progress in implementing international standards under the Kimberley Process while providing a platform for constructive engagement and peer review among participating countries.

During the review, delegates will discuss the legal and regulatory framework governing Ghana’s diamond industry, the effectiveness of internal control systems, and collaboration between government agencies, law enforcement bodies, and industry stakeholders.

The delegation comprises officials from the Russian Federation, Germany, the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Mozambique, India, Angola, and the United States of America.
