GoldBod Moves to Map Ghana’s Gold Value Chain — CEO

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has begun efforts to compile and analyse comprehensive data on the movement of gold across Ghana’s value chain, from extraction to export markets.

According to GoldBod Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, the initiative is intended to provide a clearer picture of how gold moves through the various stages of the industry, including extraction sites, local buying points, refineries and export markets.

“Effort is underway to map, compile, and analyze comprehensive data on how gold moves through Ghana's value chain. From extraction sites to local buyers, refineries, and export markets,” Mr. Gyamfi said.

The initiative is expected to provide GoldBod with critical information on the various actors and transactions within the gold ecosystem, potentially strengthening oversight of the sector.

A comprehensive mapping of the value chain could also help identify gaps and leakages in the movement of gold, while providing a stronger data foundation for policy decisions, regulation and efforts to formalise the industry.

GoldBod, which is responsible for regulating and organising Ghana’s gold trading ecosystem, has in recent months placed greater emphasis on improving transparency and traceability within the sector.

The latest move signals an effort by the Board to develop a data-driven understanding of Ghana’s gold industry—from the point of production through trading, refining and ultimately export.

The exercise, when completed, could give policymakers and industry stakeholders a clearer understanding of the volume, routes and actors involved in Ghana’s gold trade and support efforts to maximise the economic value of the country’s gold resources.
