Goldbod’s track-and-trace system commences in first quarter of 2026- CEO hints

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) is set to implement and integrate a track-and-trace system aimed at ensuring the ethical and transparent sourcing of gold.

The system, which is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026, according to GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi, will help eliminate fraud and enable the Board to trace every gram of gold produced in Ghana and purchased by GoldBod back to its source.

The CEO made this disclosure on Key Points, a news analysis programme on TV3.

“We have given timelines that by the first quarter of next year, we will have a track-and-trace system, which has never happened since Ghana became Ghana. This system will allow us to trace every gram of gold produced in Ghana and purchased by the Gold Board to its source,” he said.

The track-and-trace initiative forms a key part of GoldBod’s broader efforts to strengthen its vision of sanitizing the gold trade, improve transparency, and promote compliance across the gold value chain.

The requirement is enshrined in Section 31X of the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), which was passed by Parliament in 2025.

Mr. Gyamfi explained that gold is typically purchased at offices in district and regional capitals rather than directly from mining sites, creating challenges in verifying the origin and legality of gold presented by sellers.

“Gold is bought in offices in district and regional capitals, not directly from mining sites. So when a buyer in Koforidua receives gold nuggets or powder, that person may not have the technology to confirm whether the seller is licensed,” he explained.

President John Dramani Mahama had earlier reaffirmed GoldBod’s commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable mining in Ghana.

Speaking at the Mining in Motion Summit in June 2025, President Mahama announced that GoldBod would introduce a track-and-trace system to ensure the ethical and transparent sourcing of gold.
